Texting Record Attempt Racks Up $26K Phone Bill April 23, 2009

Text-Message Commentary Coming to the Movies? April 21, 2009

Thought movie hecklers were annoying? Well, if a new project takes off nationwide, prepare to be uber-annoyed by heckling via texting/Twittering projected directly onto the movie screen. MuVChat creator Rien Heald describes his Frankenstein-like creation to the Chicago Tribune as “a mash-up of ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000‘ and Twitter.”

SMS Help to Earthquake Victims in Italy April 17, 2009

Recent charity drives to raise money following two natural disasters in Italy have been bolstered by money sent in through text messages on cell phones.

“Help Now,”the campaign organized by daily Corriere della Sera and news program TG5, has seen donations sent in by so-called ‘thumb tribes’ or mobile phone users top or equal those sent in by credit card. Aid for earthquake victims in San Giuliano was approximately three million euro for both credit cards and SMS messages; at 942,000 euro the amount pulled in from text messages is more than triple sent in by credit cards to …

AT&T Workers Create “Ready to Strike” Ringtone April 16, 2009

AT&T and the union representing its workers are still in contract talks, but workers have published a song, with accompanying ringtone, called “Ready to Strike,” just in case.

Police in Egypt have been deployed in large numbers to prevent a national strike by pro-democracy activists, reports the BBC.Police had orders to arrest anyone taking part, and a number of activists have been held in recent days.Protests appear to have been small, but about 100 MPs, out of 454, walked out of parliament as part of the protest.The organisers of Monday’s action had urged people to wear black and called for protests including sit-ins at places of work or study.The call to protest was circulated through SMS messages and social networking sites.Via Textually

CTIA: U.S. chatters sent 1 trillion SMS messages in 2008 April 2, 2009

This just in: Cell phone users in the States have warmed up to text messages. And boy, do we love to talk.Speaking at the annual CTIA keynote Wednesday, CTIA CEO Steve Largent told show-goers that the numbers of SMS messages sent by U.S. wireless subscribers rose to a staggering 1 trillion last year—or triple the piddling 363 billion text messages we sent in 2007.If my math is correct, that comes out to about 3,700 text messages annually—or 10 texts a day—for every cell phone subscriber (about 270 million as of December 2008, according to the CTIA) in the States. …
