More Texts Than Calls in USA December 31, 2008

2008 was the point when finally the typical U.S. mobile subscriber now sends and receives more SMS text messages than they do mobile telephone calls according to Nielsen figures.As of Q2 2008, a typical U.S. mobile subscriber sends or receives 357 text messages per month, compared to placing or receiving 204 phone calls. Internet and phone communications between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia have been seriously disrupted after submarine cables were severed.It is thought the FLAG FEA, SMW4, and SMW3 lines, near the Alexandria cable station in Egypt, have all been cut.A fault was also reported on the GO submarine cable 130km off Sicily.Experts warned that it may be days before the fault is fixed and said the knock on effect could have serious repercussions on regional economies.

David Nott volunteers for a month a year with the medical charity

A British doctor volunteering in DR Congo used text message instructions from a colleague to perform a life-saving amputation on a boy.Vascular surgeon David Nott helped the 16-year-old while working 24-hour shifts with medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) in Rutshuru.The boy’s left arm had been ripped off and was badly infected and gangrenous.Mr Nott, 52, from London, had never performed the operation but followed instructions from a colleague who had. Text Messaging Will Continue To Be The Darling Of Mobile Data Revenues December 9, 2008

Forget splashy video, music and games; text messaging will continue to be the “cash cow of mobile data revenues for some time to come,” according to a new report from Portio Research.

The mobile messaging market is expected rake in $130 billion in revenues by the end of the year, and is on pace to climb to $224 billion by 2013.
