Phone a friend in exams August 21, 2008

A Sydney girls’ school is redefining the concept of cheating by allowing students to “phone a friend” and use the internet and i-Pods during exams.

Presbyterian Ladies’ College at Croydon is giving the assessment method a trial run with year 9 English students and plans to expand it to all subjects by the end of the year.

An English teacher, Dierdre Coleman, who is dean of students in years 7 to 9, is co-ordinating the pilot which she believes has the potential to change the way the Higher School Certificate examinations are run.

Texting and data dominate phone use August 8, 2008

It seems that using a mobile phone no longer means making a phone call, as users increasingly turn to texting, photos and video for communication.

The latest data on mobile phone use has revealed a huge spike in text messaging and data-based communications, often at the expense of the conventional phone calls.

Nearly 1.5 billion (1,492,400,769) text messages (SMS) were sent per week between January and May, 2008, according to the Mobile Data Association (MDA). Year-on-year growth for May 2007 to May 2008 was 30 per cent.

DMA: Text message campaigns most successful August 6, 2008

Text message promotions are the most successful mobile marketing campaigns, found the Direct Marketing Association in its first ever quantitative research into the medium.

It’s good to talk, but the second most popular activity on a mobile phone is text messaging. It also happens to be the most successful mobile advertising medium, according to a recently released report by the DMA. Of the 800 U.S. mobile phone users surveyed, 70% said they had responded to a marketing text message whereas just 41% had responded to a survey and 30% to email offers.

Easing Flight Delay Frustrations with SMS August 1, 2008

Frustration among airline passengers at flight delays and missing luggage could be eased by updates being sent to their mobile phones, according to aviation technology researchers. News.scotsman.com reports

“Text messages could keep travellers abreast of disruption and alert them to mislaid bags, saving needless waiting at baggage carousels.

A report by SITA, How Mobile Technology Will Enhance Passenger Travel, stated: “Surveys indicate passengers are highly concerned about delays and cancellations, but particularly in times of disruption it has been difficult to get accurate information to passengers quickly. “Rapid dissemination of information via mobile devices can reduce frustration.”
