In a Harris Interactive survey of 2,030 US adults of whom, 1,778 have actually flown in an airplane, a full three quarters say that cellphone usage on airplanes should be restricted to “non-talking features.” In other words, email, texting, and surfing the Web. That’s a pretty significant majority seeing as how the EC has cleared the way for calls within European airspace. 69% of consumers agreed that if voice calls are permitted, a special “talking zone” should be established so that other passengers are not interrupted.

While the survey reflects our own opinions, take note that the results benefit sites like …

Msg is clear as joy of txt proves gr8 for society May 26, 2008

FAR from being rbsh, it is actually gr8 for society. Experts believe that new forms of communication such as mobile phone texting, email and instant messaging are helping us stay in touch with each other.

And a new study has shown that far from being a scourge of grammar and correct spelling, users of instant messaging and texting are actually much more likely to use the Queen’s English than the abbreviations that annoy purists.

The impact of the abbreviated language used in texting, such as U instead of you and 2 instead of to/too, has been such that Scottish schools have even …

Worldwide mobile advertising is projected to surpass $2.7 billion in 2008, up from $1.7 billion in 2007, but the market has developed slowly and obstacles remain, according to Gartner. Ease of use and relevancy to consumers are two important factors that must be addressed to help build momentum in the mobile advertising market.

“Innovative developments, such as minimizing the number of keystrokes required to access information, using the phone’s camera to improve the overall user experience and tying content or shopping location relevancy to advertisements will move the market forward,” said …

It knows only 32 words, but someday, it may get a grip on the entire human vocabulary.

It is a sensor-equipped glove, known as HandTalk , that can translate gestures into spoken words on a cell phone. It was developed by students at Carnegie Mellon University as part of a class research project.

Mobile Ads: Useful or Annoying? May 14, 2008

By Kim Hart via Washington Post

The promise of mobile marketing has been talked about for several years now, yet we still haven’t seen the flurry of cellphone ads that have long been predicted–let alone the sophisticated ads consumers see in other countries.

This week, the Federal Trade Commission held a “town hall” meeting to discuss the state of the mobile marketing industry and what, if any, rules need to be in place to guide its development. Several ad agency folks and other industry execs reported what we’ve been seeing for a while now: mobile marketing is …

Mobile Marketing Fantasy Vs. Reality May 12, 2008

Those who doubt that mobile marketing hasn’t made headway might want to go amp themselves.

Among the brands that ponied up millions for a piece of the Super Bowl this year was PepsiCo beverage Amp Energy. While its 15-second TV spots didn’t venture far from the proven realms of Big Game locker-room humor—one featured an overweight truck driver starting a stalled-out car via jumper cables hooked up to his nipples—a quieter, related effort was reaching much further out. How far? Well, to people who might not even have had the game on at all. As part of its NFL deal, Amp …

German Firms Patent Scented Text Messaging May 9, 2008

Two German companies have patented technology for sending scented text messages between mobile phones.

The chip, which carries a range of around 100 pre-defined scents, has been developed by the Institute of Sensory Analysis and interactive services firm Convisual and will be on the market in one to two years. Naturally, the makers think that the chip will be used for sending pleasant odors to friends and family — vanilla, rose and Christmas cinnamon are on the list — but surely the claim to be able to send ‘the smell of the beach and sunshine’ is a little optimistic? SMS …
