1.1 billion mobiles sold around the world in 2007: study January 28, 2008

PARIS (AFP) - More than 1.1 billion mobile phones were sold around the world last year, and developing countries in Africa and elsewhere should maintain the momentum in 2008, according to a study released Thursday.

Nokia of Finland strengthened its position as the world’s best selling phone maker while South Korea’s Samsung moved up to second place and American maker Motorola dropped back to third, according to the Strategy Analytics study.

Apple’s much vaunted iPhone was not as big a hit as expected however, the study said.

YouTube expands mobile video efforts January 26, 2008

YouTube is making its entire catalog of more than 200 million video clips available to all mobile users with 3G phones operating on either a UMTS/HSDPA or EV-DO network. Not only can users view videos, but they can also upload content immediately from their cell phone and view it on a cell phone.

The company says that it has made a huge investment in infrastructure to make this service available.  Besides the regular streaming service, YouTube Mobile will also enable users to personalize their service by letting them rate and comment on videos using their phone.

Mobile Web Sites’ Growth Spurt To Continue January 18, 2008

SOME 40% OF WEB SITE operators have launched mobile sites and another 22% plan to do so in the next year, according to a new JupiterResearch study.

“This number is relatively large given that the experience is not yet mature today and likely reflects mobile versions that consist of frames and offer a kludgy user interface,” states the report titled “Mobile Web Sites: Designing for Mobility.”

Betnow Scores First Funding For Mobile Text Gambling January 7, 2008

London-based mobile gambling service Betnow has scored a first round of funding from Balderton Capital and angel investors. The amount is under wraps for now but is known to be healthy for a first round.
