Gartner took quite a leap of faith in predicting that SMS usage in 2008 will top 2007’s numbers. In fact, Gartner goes so far as to say that the number of messages will top 2.3 trillion worldwide. That’s an average of 767 messages per mobile subscriber over the course of 12 months. I think we can all do better than that.

Smartphone Sales Grow 165 Percent in U.S. December 16, 2007
The inexorable march of the mobile phone continues. According to the latest survey by the NPD Group, the U.S. saw a total of $3.2 billion in third quarter sales, an impressive 47 percent surge compared to a year ago. A good portion of that growth can actually be attributed to smartphone sales too, which accounted for 11 percent of total phone sales. PRE-TEENS IN THE U.S. ARE more connected than ever before, thanks to the widespread use of mobile phones.
The Nielsen Co. released the findings of an in-depth study on the mobile media and cross-media behavior of U.S. “tweens” (ages 8-12). The report estimates that: 35% of tweens own a mobile phone, 20% of tweens have used text messaging, and 21% of tweens have used ring & answer tones.

Kate Hemond, a nanny who cares for six children, was considering salmon for their supper recently. Standing at the fish counter of a Whole Foods market near Boston, she pulled out her cellphone to text message a service that could tell her whether the farmed Atlantic or the wild Alaskan contained polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, which are known toxic substances.
